Dogs Impounded by Animal Control
When you register your dog with the city, staff are able to contact you immediately should they find it loose and running around unattended.
Stray dogs picked up by Animal Control are first checked for tags, microchips, and tattoos. If the pet is licensed and owner clear of outstanding fines or repeat offence warnings, efforts to reunite pet and owner begin immediately. Once impounded, the fee is $50 plus $20 for each additional day (day charge doubles for dogs legally designated dangerous).
When owner information is unavailable, photos of dogs impounded are posted on the City Lost & Found Pets and Facebook pages. If you don't see it there, call City Bylaw at 250-837-4747 to check if your dog has been picked up but a photo not yet posted. If no luck, completing the Lost or Dog Alert Form immediately gives Bylaw Officers critical information to be on the lookout for your dog.
To claim an impounded dog, call City Bylaw at 250-837-4747 for an appointment to visit the shelter. In addition to producing photo ID, a valid dog licence, and impound fee payment, you'll be asked for proof of ownership in the form of photographs of you with the dog, microchip registration, or documentation of the purchase of the dog.
Impounded Dogs with No Licence
If your impounded dog isn't registered with the City, don't sweat it. You'll simply be asked to purchase a licence ($20 per year or $75 lifetime for spayed/neutered) and provide proof of ownership prior to receiving your dog.
If Your Dog is Lost
Once confirmed that Bylaw Enforcement Officers do not have your stray, in addition to completing the Lost Dog Alert Form, other steps can me taken to alert the community for help.
- To clarify, the City only posts photos of impounded dogs. By completing the Lost Dog Alert Form, Bylaw will be able to call you the moment they have it.
- Ads for lost dogs can be posted on the Revelstoke Community Facebook Page then shared by friends on their pages. The Humane Society will also gladly share it on our Facebook page.
- Posting on The Stoke List and RevySell are both good but you'll need to repost every few days as ads quickly get buried under new ads.
- You can also make a poster to display around town (see poster printing deal and list of best places to post).
