The 3-3-3 Rule of Adoption

Bringing a new pet home is a joyful and life-changing experience, but it also takes time for your new companion to feel safe, confident, and loved.
The 3-3-3 Rule is a simple way to understand what most animals go through in their first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months after adoption.
Every pet is unique, and some may take more or less time to adapt. Still, these milestones can help you set realistic expectations and support your furry friend through the transition.
The First 3 Days: Overwhelm and Adjustment
In the first few days, your new pet is often feeling confused or overwhelmed. They may:
-
Hide in quiet places like under the bed or behind furniture.
-
Refuse food or treats.
-
Sleep a lot or seem unusually tired.
-
Test boundaries or appear anxious.
This reaction is completely normal. Everything — the smells, sounds, people, and routines — is new to them.
How you can help:
Provide a calm, predictable space where they can decompress. Avoid too many visitors or new experiences. Let them come to you at their own pace, and focus on gentle reassurance instead of forcing interaction.
The First 3 Weeks: Learning and Settling In
By this time, your pet is beginning to recognize your routine and understand that they are safe. Their true personality starts to shine through!
They may become more playful, curious, or affectionate — or begin testing boundaries to see what’s allowed.
How you can help:
Keep routines consistent. Introduce basic training or litter box reminders through positive reinforcement: praise, treats, and patience.
This stage is also when minor behaviour issues might appear, so stay calm and consistent as your pet learns what life in your home is all about.
The First 3 Months: Trust and Connection
After about three months, most pets begin to feel fully at home. They’ve learned your household rhythms, built trust, and formed a bond with you. Their confidence grows, and they start to explore their world more freely.
How you can help:
Continue offering love, enrichment, and training. Explore new activities together: walks, games, or quiet cuddles. Maintain their routine while giving them opportunities to learn and thrive.
You’ll now see the beautiful, genuine personality of the companion you welcomed into your life.
❤️ A Gentle Reminder
Adoption is not an instant transformation — it’s a journey of patience, structure, and care.
The 3-3-3 Rule reminds us that every adopted animal has gone through big changes in a short time, and some may need a little extra love and time to feel truly at home.
